The halls of the Shenzhen trade fair buzzed with activity. It’s hot that day. Vendors hawked gadgets and gizmos from every booth. Out of the corner of his eye, FJ spotted a flash of bright orange. There on a back table sat a cute mini retro video game console, straight out of the 1970s.
“No way!” Our colleague Outstanding shouted, rushing over to examine it. The memories came flooding back of long summer days battling pixelated aliens and gobbling up ghostly pellets. We huddled around the screen, transported back to childhood as we guided a tiny plumber through perilous pipes.
FJ barely noticed Outstanding scanning the console with the Amazon app until he whooped, “It’s not on Amazon yet!” My eyes went wide. This could be the edge we needed in a competitive marketplace.
But doubts crept in on the ride back to the office. How did it stand in competition? We dove into research, scrutinizing the top listings. That’s when we spotted it – the prominent antenna. Prone to snapping off, it posed a safety hazard, especially for kids.
Our retro console didn’t have that flaw. But touting safety felt uninspired, hardly the unique advantage we imagined. FJ sighed, turning the console over in my hands. There must be an untapped market for it, if we could just find the right angle. The game was on.
As we racked our brains, the little console taunted us from the desk. Its bright orange casing and retro styling held such potential, if only we could pinpoint the right angle. There must be an untapped market out there, longing for this blast from the past.
But we were stumped. Every avenue led to dead ends. Safety? Too mundane. Durability? Not unique enough. We were running out of options and time.
